5 Things You Need To Know About Cannes

By Natalie Simone Meade

From the pronunciation of Cannes to key industry players, your curiosities about this iconic event are finally satisfied. Here are the top 5 things you need to know about Cannes Lions:

  1. What is the correct way to pronounce Cannes?

It is not “cans”, like what you find in a six-pack.

It is not “con”, like an artist. (Be careful: this pronunciation is also an insult in French)

It is, simply, “can.”

We asked some of our friends that we met in the south of France how to say “Cannes,” so check out the video above to make sure you’re getting it right!

  1. Why is the festival in Cannes?

For most of the year, Cannes is a small town on the French Riviera, where rosé is abundant and the people are laidback. The city’s history is deep-rooted in film. The Cannes Film Festival was created as an answer to Benito Mussolini’s festival in Venice. The first International Film Festival debuted in Cannes in 1946, and, in 1984, Cannes Lions found its permanent home in the south of France.

  1. What is the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity?

Within the industry, the festival is affectionately known as “Cannes,” and it is an international gathering that showcases and celebrates the most inspiring and creative work in media. Again, the Cannes Lions are different from the film festival that occurs in May. During the Cannes Lions, eight days in June are devoted to the power of creativity. IPG Mediabrands and its dynamic portfolio of agencies hope to showcase their work and take home awards during the Media Lions Wednesday evening, and in other categories as they are announced throughout the week.

  1. What is the Palais des Festivales?

Palais is the French word for palace. In Cannes, the Palais is a convention center that draws business tourism because of its exquisite backdrop of rolling hills that jut out into the Côte d’Azur. During the festival, the Palais hosts various award shows and conversations with media moguls, including our very own Global CEO, Henry Tajer.

5) Who’s here?
